Pandemic Woes and Ways

July 21, 2020

March 15th 2020 is the day the COVID 19 pandemic turned into a lockdown. Schools closed, we sheltered in place and learned that toilet paper would be more valuable than gold. The first death in SLO county was an elderly person and it was thought that only old people would die from the virus. The death toll rises daily and we learned that anyone was fair game for this deadly virus. We also learned that reinfection could occur. The country is divided to the worst extent I’ve seen in my lifetime. Many cling to Trump’s words as their hatred and prejudice grows like a malignant tumor. Conspiracy theories abound. Federal agents dressed in camouflage take over cities to round up protestors. All we are told is that they are from the Federal government. As the number of infected indicated a decline, stores and other businesses opened. People went to large gatherings. Then a black man was killed by police brutality. He was one of many who suffered for the color of their skin. Protests were everywhere. The people took to the streets, many unmasked. The virus spread and is currently unmanageable because many will not wear masks and despite CDC warnings, they ignore guidelines and want life to return to pre-pandemic status immediately. Schools closed and many are angry and want their children back at school. Teachers were thrown into panic mode when they discovered that they must teach virtually. It seems surreal that the USA is now below 3rd world countries in virus infection rates. Trump is incoherent and denies that the virus is deadly. He has no plan and does not answer questions from journalists. These are dangerous times.

There are vaccines now and people can receive it ranked by vulnerability. Toilet paper remains to be a coveted commodity. The food delivery services continue to serve those who are unable to venture out. Many refuse to vaccinate due to various media reports. Conspiracy theories abound. Others stand by their position that wearing masks violates their freedom. I simply want to live.

It. appears that the vaccine will not be available for many until sometime in February, possibly March. There is a push to open schools, so teachers will be next to receive the vaccine. New Year’s Eve was calm and quiet in my small beach town.

Joe Biden is our president now. Vaccines given to essential workers and over 75 year olds. Next will be those over 65. Variant strains are more contagious. When will this end?

Feb. 7, 2021

We reached a plateau in California. So the Governor has loosened restrictions. Super Bowl will likely cause a spike as some ignore best practices in favor of gathering.

Vaccines are available to most now. There are some who refuse to vaccinate or wear a mask. A variant strain is in most states. Schools are opening slowly as children may be next to receive the vaccine. This has been a difficult time, but I keep thinking of how resilient our first responders and teachers have been. It most assuredly has taken a toll on mental health for many.

I retired from Elementary Education and now teach an online Masters Degree course in Literacy for pre-credential teacher candidates. I also supervise teacher candidates for two universities. I am a teacher, a mentor, and a writer. I collect resources from various sites and articles to assist my teacher candidates. I am happy to share them with teachers, students, homeschool parents. I will add to them routinely.
