I have heard and read about mindfulness, but never really practiced it. There always seems to be a thousand things to think about, do, or plan. I ignore the most basic of elements, the right here, right now. I attended an online group to learn more about quieting the incessant brain noise, to be in the moment. After listening to a guided meditation, I felt completely at peace. I have read a great book, Emotional Agility, by Susan David, and learned “don’t believe everything you think.” I learned to take time to simply breathe, and attend to my breaathing.
It sounds easy enough, but to still the bombardment of thoughts it is important to place focus on something that is with us all the time and delve into the breath. I notice the rise and fall of my chest, the warmth of an exhale. I even imagine my lungs hungering for the inhale. It is quite calming when I take the time to be completely immersed in the single act of breathing.
I am a beginner, discovering that even in my old age it is not too late to learn, especially something that will help me savor every moment and create calm. I always say that I want to be completely present for my grandchildren. This simple practice of mindfulness helps me still my mind to take in the preciousness of every moment.
There are many YouTube videos about mindfulness. Try it for yourself.
