A fluent reader reads smoothly and is enjoyable to listen to.

The components of fluency are: Accuracy, Rate, Expression

Fluency is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension.

The most powerful way for you to help your students is to read aloud to them, often and with great expression.

You can put a selected text in a plastic sheet.
Same-level partners can track words read correctly.
Set timer for one minute.

In my own classroom, we performed many Reader’s Theater.

I wrote my own scripts, but you can get them online easily. Many are free.

I would practice by choral reading, echo reading, and partner reading.

Reader’s Theater helps build  confidence.  Adjust script for struggling readers,

It is inclusive ➜  ➦  ➨ It builds confidence.

ECHO READING

To do this properly, each student has a copy of a text

Read a line and have students echo what you read.

After time, increase to reading a paragraph and students echo.

This can be done with partners, but teacher needs to monitor.

Ideally, the teacher does the reading

and students echo.

List of Ways to Foster Fluency:

  • Repeated Readings
  • Partner read
  • Choral reading
  • Echo reading
  • Sight word practice
  • Reader’s Theater
