Reconnecting

I turned on the news and heard of a category 4 hurricane heading for Florida. I have a cousin who lives in the nothern part of Florida, and I had an overwhelming urge to contact her and make sure she was safe. One journalist described the hurricane as “unsurvivable” in certain areas. Images on the screen were terrifying. I began to pray for residents in the path of the hurricane. I hoped I could use the internet to reach out in an effort to get news from my cousin or one of her family members. I sent a message to her grandaughter who I found on Facebook, and she responded to let me know that there were all safe. Then today she sent me my cousin’s phone number. I tried calling, but it went to voicemail. I know this is ridiculous, but I kept thinking back to when we were kids and I tore up all of her Monopoly money. I hoped she didn’t recall that and would call me back. Within a few minutes I received a call and spent time catching up with her. We vowed to get together and not allow any more time to pass without a reunion. We are old ladies now, and realize that family is precious. Time is just too short. It took a catastrophe for me to realize how important it is to stay connected to loved ones. I am grateful to have the opportunity to reconnect. I continue to pray for those less fortunate.
